Our feature article this month deals with getting and staying on track while building and maintaining your online business. Working from home for yourself can sometimes bring up a whole series of "issues" that keep you from completing important projects. Would you like to make a bet, Which one gets the fishes? -Chinese Rhyme Getting started and keeping going are perhaps the two most important attributes of the successful online businessperson. The truth is, the future starts today. To be happy and successful in business, as in life, you must act. It is easy to get discouraged by the sheer volume of preparation and follow up needed to launch an Internet business, or to finish that article, website, or promotion idea that you just KNOW will skyrocket your business. The top mistake online entrepreneurs make is quitting too early. However, the potential rewards you can reap from the Internet are astronomical as long as you keep trying. On the Internet, as in the physical world, getting a business off the ground takes work and time. So perseverance is a key ingredient. Lets face it, no one is going to pay you money to sit there planning and dreaming about how much money you can make on the Internet. So, today, right now, you must do at least one thing to promote or enhance your online business. Ok, so how do you get started? Make a list of things you are considering doing. This could be as simple as: *Picking a name for your website, or newsletter. *Finally building (or finishing) the web page for your website *Writing an article for your newsletter, or new sales copy *Optimizing a web page for search engines *Learning how to accept credit cards on your website *Writing and testing a new add or offer for your business *Contacting other business owners in related businesses to discuss strategic alliances (or just to trade links or ads) *Submitting your site to search engines. Well, you get the idea; all of those ideas are a project onto themselves. You can easily get overwhelmed. Here is my recipe for tackling your business projects: 1. Break up the project into bits and pieces. For example, if you are writing sales copy for your product or service, you can break it up into steps: brainstorm a title, write an introduction, write the benefits of your product, add testimonials, add in the offer, ask for the sale, and sweeten the offer if they buy now! 2. Define a time limit that you can commit each day to the project. This must be a comfortable time for you, anywhere from 15 minutes to one hour seems to work perfectly. Remember, you can always break the project up into smaller steps to fit the time you have each day. 3. Now, once you have the pieces, and time allocation defined, commit to doing at least one step each day. If you did that with the example above, you could have a new sales letter in just one week! You know you've put it off longer than that already J. We all have procrastinated at one time or another, because we think it will take too long. Well it doesn't take too long if you just take it one step at a time. Every project can be broken down and completed in this manner. I have found that keeping three or more projects going at the same time is fairly easy if I just commit to doing one step at a time. It also helps me to keep motivated, since I can do projects I like doing every day, while still tackling those "have to do" projects that are not as much fun. Of course, you can speed up the process by committing to do two or three steps each day if you make the steps small enough. Use this idea to pace yourself. I believe you will find that more work gets done every day and the renewed sense of accomplishment will be encouragement to fuel your online efforts. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Submitting your site to Yahoo! by Sumatra Roy Getting your site an optimum listing in Yahoo! is perhaps the most important step in effective web site promotion.
